Double-check! Double-check!
Do your homework. Don't take anything at face value.
When you encounter a business or charity that you're unfamiliar with, do an internet search or ask someone you trust to help you research. Look up the organization in a phone book or online directory to verify phone numbers or other information you've been given.
You may be surprised by what you find! And if everything does check out, you can have some peace of mind.
